Depression
Depression is a mood as mental illness. Person with
depression can feel sad, angry and lost. depression symptoms can be loss of
sleep, low energy, irritation. Some people can think of suicide in acute cases.
It can stop people doing their work and look after themselves and their
families. It might be a short-term illness or it might come or go throughout a
life of person.
Types of depression
There are several types of depression.
- Major depression
This type can be mild, moderate or severe. When a person
having symptoms of depression for more then 2 weeks and its interfering that
person’s daily life, its major depression. It generally can be seen in adult.
- Persistent depression
Like major depression, except that the symptoms comes and
goes for 1 or 2 years depending on the age of patient.
- Situational depression
This is one of the common types of depression caused some stressful life events or series of events that leads the substantial changes in life. Events like divorce, death in family, moving to a different place, retirement from work, or in circumstances like this, situational depression may occur.
- Atypical depression
Atypical depression can be characterized by sleeping too
much, eating a lot that leads to increased weight, heaviness in limbs and
communication problems. Unlike other types, people with this type of depression
tend to improve moods and consequence to positive events.
Causes of depression
Depression can cause by different things in different people.
genes can be a big reason of depression, if it runs in families. There are also
other reasons like:
- Health problem
- Sleeping problem
- Loss and grief
- Stress and life problems
- Traumatic life events
- Loneliness
- Unhealthy eating
- Lack of physical activity
- Smoking
- Medications
- Drugs and alcohol
Stress and feeling miserable can lead to depression. But not
everyone with these feeling has a depression.
Diagnosis of depression
It can be diagnosed by referring the person’s symptoms.
Usually psychologist or general practitioner diagnose the depression. The
person can be referred by GP to psychiatrist if symptoms are unusual and
severe. Doctors sometimes want to see how the person goes over the time. That’s
why doctors may not make a diagnosis right away.
Treatment of depression
Treatment of depression can be done on the basis of condition
of person’s depression, preference, personality and symptoms.
Mild depression can be treated with psychological treatment.
Medication is not needed.
Moderate depression can be treated with psychological
treatment and medication.
Most severe depression can be treated with antidepressant
medicines and psychological treatment
